Creating a Guest Room in Your Living Room

There are times when our homes are overflowing and we have more guests to stay than we have guest rooms (if we have a guest room at all). If you have that kind of situation it is useful to be able to have someone sleep (and give them a comfortable night’s rest too) in your living room. Here are some tips to make sure your guest has a pleasant stay:-

Bed

If you are planning to buy new sofas then it is worth making one of them a sofa bed as this will provide the ideal solution for guests spending the night in your living area. Sofa beds look just like a normal sofa but when you lift up the chair cushions there is a bed mechanism tucked into the base of the furniture. Pull on the mechanism and you have an extra double bed! If a sofa bed is not an option for you it is good to have an inflatable mattress tucked away in a closet for unexpected guests. Usually these come with a foot pump so that they can be quickly blown up to form a single or double mattress. Finally, a Murphy bed hardware kit might be an option for some as it allows you to build a foldaway bed for relatively low cost.

Bedding

You will not be able to make up the bed until the sofa bed has been opened out or mattress pumped up so it is important to have somewhere to store your bedding. Buy a bedding ensemble which goes well with the sofa and the rest of your living room to give a coordinated look when the bed is made up. It does not seem like a particularly important point but as you can get bedding sets in every color under the sun it is an easy way to limit the endless choice available. Have plenty of pillows and an extra blanket available too so they are not tempted to use (and crush) your beautiful decorative cushions.

Storage

If possible allocate your visitors a drawer and hanging space in a nearby closet. If there is space in a closet in the room so much the better but this is not always possible.

Lighting

Provide a lamp on a table near the bed so that guest are able to get to bed without falling over the furniture and are able to read in bed.
