How to Add Accents with Cushions

Cushions are a great way of brightening up sofas, chairs and beds with an instant splash of color. They can also work well as a colorful seating area in a child’s room if you pile them together to make a cozy corner.

If your room is quite plain, cushions are a way of adding color at little expense. A black and white pure monochromatic color scheme with white walls, white tile floor, black rug and black sofas can look dull and boring even though you had planned it with impact in mind. But add a few hot pink or bright turquoise cushions and a matching vase and it quickly comes to life without too much trouble at all.

The important thing is to add a range of cushions and not have them all the same particularly when it comes to texture and pattern. With the hot pink cushions, for example, you will find them made of embroidered satin, pleated cotton and plain velvet with tassels and piping not to mention fluffy fun fur fabric and knitted.

With a neutral cream color scheme including cream sofas, plain cream curtains, oak flooring and beige rugs it is a great idea to add some color with patterned cushions.

With patterned fabric look to add accent cushions with different patterns which include the same colors. You will often find these coordinating fabrics in quality soft furnishing fabric collections. For instance, you might have plaid, striped and floral cushions incorporating the same five colors. Add contrast to your patterned cushions by adding some plain ones in one or two of the colors.

Pick up on the cushion colors in other parts of the room if possible to tie the whole room together, perhaps replacing the beige rug with a colored one matching one of the cushion colors or adding a colored trimming to the curtains. Even a vase of spring flowers might do the trick if colors are similar.
