Cushions and Curtains

If you visit a large department store with a home section you will no doubt be amazed at the selection of cushions on offer (and if you look online you will almost fall off your chair at the choice you have there!) The range of colors, sizes, trimming, textures and fabrics is astonishing.

And if you look at curtains and window valances online your selection will be equally as vast especially if you take into account all the options you have for getting curtains and valance window treatments made to measure.

So how do you get these elements to work together in your living room?

Start with your curtains which cover the greatest area in terms of square feet and are the element you are most likely to notice first when you enter the room. Choose your curtain fabric. It can be plain or patterned. It does not matter as long as it goes with the look and feel you are aiming for and any other elements you have already chosen for the room.

Whatever fabric you choose for your curtains, have two or three cushions made up in that fabric so that you get the exact match. (Curtain makers will often provide this as an additional service. Or you can buy extra fabric or even an extra curtain panel if you are buying your curtains ready made)

Then choose your remaining cushions using the other colors in the curtains and valances (if there is more than one color) or using other colors in the room (if there are not). On the cushions make sure that you vary the trimming and texture as much as possible. If your curtain fabric is plain choose contrasting patterned fabric cushions or contrasting trim. Conversely, if your curtain fabric is patterned add a number of plain (yet textured) cushions in the other colors.
