Lumbar Support Pillow

This article is about lumbar support pillows but before I talk about them let’s define what’s probably a typical day for a lot of office workers. Your day may go something like this…

6:00 wake up and crawl out of your canopy bed and do all the usual things involved with getting ready for work. You make or may not eat a “real” breakfast and shoot out the door. You probably battle traffic if you live in suburbia before finally zipping up to your office in an elevator. Once in your office, you sit down at your desk, have a few sips of coffee and start working. As you work a number of factors begin to work on your back. One, your office chair is maybe a little high and perhaps a little farther from your desk than it should be. Lunch time comes and you’ve been sitting down now for about three hours now so you get up and stretch a minute and head on down to the local sub sandwich shop for a “healthy” lunch.

It’s now after lunch, and you’re back at your desk where you finish out the working day and battle traffic to get back home. Once you’re there it’s time for a little “me” where you relax, have a few beers and watch Gray’s Anatomy before hitting the sack.

If this sounds like a typical day for you, unless you’re in your early twenties, you’ll probably start to have bouts of occasional lower back pain. While strengthening your abdomen through abdominal exercises will help you, one of the best things you can do is to make sure you use correct posture and the best way I know how is to use a lumbar support pillow.

Lumbar support pillows often look like half of a cylinder and meant to sit between the backrest of your chair and the small of your lower back. They help but ensuring that you keep an upright posture while sitting rather than hunching over which is probably a natural tendency for a lot of people. Another benefit to using a lumbar support pillow is that after using one, you’ll feel less fatigue after sitting for long periods.

Lumbar support pillows come in a wide range of materials. There are pillows filled with just about every filling imaginable but for most people the standard foam or memory foam pillows will work best while being economical. Additionally some models offer massage while others offer heat capabilities. These models are available for both home and office as well as units that plug into your car’s cigarette lighter. If you think that you might benefit from on of these models, I would encourage you to look around.
