Less Pain with Orthopedic Pillows

If you’re living on a daily basis with aches and pains, then orthopedic pillows can be a great help to you. In my daily life, I use several varieties of orthopedic pillows and they helped relieve pain. From cervical pillows which work to relieve pain by supporting the head and neck, lumbar pillows which help your back when sitting, and body pillows that help support the entire body, there is a wide array of pillows designed for eliminating pain. In this article, we’ll look at some of the different kinds of pillows and how they can help you in your search for eliminating pain.

The first type of thought I’d like to talk about, is a cervical pillow. In your spine, the bones of the neck are referred to as the cervical spine. It is from these bones, that many nerves exit the spine and therefore it’s no wonder, that many problems that bother the neck, bother other parts of the body as well. A cervical pillow on the other hand, is designed to give additional support to the neck while sleeping. Another type of cervical pillow, is designed to simply raise the head while sleeping. If you suffer from heartburn, or sometimes have difficulty sleeping due to breathing problems, this kind of pillow may be right for you. Another kind of pillow, that falls under the heading of a cervical pillow, is the travel pillow. This pillow looks like a horseshoe and is designed to support the neck and head while sleeping upright. Often times this means sleeping on an airplane and hence the name travel pillow.

Another pillow that I want to talk about is called a knee pillow. Like the name suggests, knee pillows are used either between the knees or under the knees. One type of knee pillow is used between the legs and is best for side sleepers. This kind of pillow works to keep the spine aligned while sleeping. The other kind of pillow, is shaped like a wedge and is used under the knees, and is mostly for keeping the legs elevated while sleeping or laying down. This is useful for reducing blood flow in the legs like when you have inflammation in the legs and want to reduce swelling.

Lumbar pillows are used to support the lower back. Some are designed to be used in your bed and help you sit upright while reading. Other lumbar pillows, are used to support the lower back while sitting, in say.. an office chair. These pillows are especially useful for office workers or truck drivers, or anyone else who has to remain seated for long periods of time.

Body PillowThe last kind of pillow that I’m going to talk about is often called a body pillow. These pillows are often very large, and are used to support the entire body especially the hips and shoulders. Anybody that’s married knows, that your significant other often sleeps better with one arm and one leg draped across your body. Now while this may be fine for the person doing the draping, it introduces a couple problems to the person being draped upon. First, it can get hot! Second, as the night gets longer and longer and longer, that delicate arm and leg becomes heavier and heavier and heavier. A body pillow may be an amicable solution to marital bliss in the bed. Although I’m half joking, the body pillow can really help relieve pain.

In this article, we looked at several different kinds of pillows. We have looked at the several types of cervical pillows, at knee pillows, at lumbar pillows, as well as body pillows. And hopefully, you can now see how different orthopedic pillows, can help you become pain-free.
